Last summer, L.A. burned, at least around the edges.                

I live in L.A., but close to downtown, miles from the fires.

An out of town friend who knew where the fires were, and where I live, called to ask, "Are you all right?"

"Of course," I said, not sure why I felt annoyed by his concern; still, I ended up at the front window, just to check outside.

There, the thin, gauzy curtains, as well as some odd effect of the light, made it seem like the whole of my front yard was on fire.
